Hi Dad Pete, I really recommend cryosurgery for dealing with stomatitis. Austin suffered for many years and I was resigned that he was going to lose his teeth. But happily I changed vets to one who was more knowledgeable and he thought that Austin's problem could be slowed down or halted by this procedure. He has had to have it done twice but the vet is very pleased that it went even better than he thought. I don't have too much idea about what happens, but the vet told me that he is surprised that more don't carry out this relatively simple op when it can remove unnecessary pain and suffering from our anipals. In the UK it is not cheap - I don't know how much it would be in the US!
